The new Apple iPhone 4 has finally been released, and it seems that it is indeed a handset that has been worth waiting for. The traditional update in features is now partnered by a gorgeous new look, making the phone perhaps the most desirable ever.
Much has been said about the fantastic Retina display on the iPhone 4. It is a huge step up from the screen offered on the 3GS, boasting a massive 400% rise in the quality on offer thanks to the superb 960 x 640 resolution. To put these figures in to perspective it is perhaps easier to look back at Apples earlier release, the iPad. This unit offers a 10" screen with a great picture quality. The iPhone 4 offers a 3.5" screen but with a huge 78% of the pixels that are offered on the iPad. If we break this down into a pixels per square inch figure, it works out at 326, more than the human eye can register. This is where the name "Retina" display developed from. An 800:1 contrast ratio means that colours have a richness and depth that is not often found on a mobile phone. The iPhone 4 is a slightly smaller device than the 3GS with dimensions of 115.2 x 58.6 x 9.3mm, making it slimmer and narrower. With the weight remaining the same however, the unit does feel a touch heavier, but this only adds to the perception that this is a well built device. The smart looking stainless steel strip that is wrapped around the chassis not only looks good, but also acts as the phones antenna. This helps Apple achieve the 9.3mm depth.
As is always the case with Apple products, connectivity is always well catered for and the iPhone 4 is no exception. Being a mobile phone, staying in touch whilst on the move is essential. Thanks to GSM, EDGE and 3G technology being incorporated, this will not be a problem. Push notifications are available on the new unified inbox, meaning that not only can you link several e mail accounts, you can be kept up to date with incoming messages in real time. Wireless LAN connections are also available, so when at home, work or anywhere where you have access to a network, the phone will automatically connect for the fastest and ultimately most satisfying online experience. This WIFI connection is also utilised for Apples new "FaceTime" video calling system. By using the internet rather than a cellular network, calls no not suffer from issues encountered by earlier attempts at this format, and costs are free if you exclude you Broadband rental.
The iPhone 4 has exceeded all expectations since its release, which is understandable given that not only is it the best looking phone available, but also the most well equipped.
